The first American Main Battle tank entered service in 1960 as the M-60. The hull
is basically the same as that of the M-48s. It is divided into three compartments:
driving, fighting and engine/transmission. The new turret is better armored and
considerably larger as it must be to mount the 105mm main gun.
The L7A1 105mm M68 main gun is of British design, but built in the United
States. It can fire between six and eight rounds per minute. The tank carries 63
rounds of main gun ammunition. The M-60 also carries two machine guns.
All M-60s were up-rated to the A3 configuration beginning in 1977. Specific im-
provements included a new laser range finder connected to an improved fire
control system that uses an M21 solid state, rather than mechanical, computer.
The new system allows either the gunner or the tank commander to fire the main
gun. Bore sighting is made easier with the laser system.
A nuclear-biological-chemical warfare protection system was added in the M-60A3
configuration. This includes a central air filtration system. Complete night vision
equipment has been fitted to the tank and includes an improved searchlight. Oth-
er improvements include replaceable track pads and a new diesel engine. A
Halon fire extinguisher system, a smoke-screen system and a M219 smoke gre-
nade launcher are included. A deep-water fording kit allows the M-60 to be fitted
with a snorkel so it can traverse water up to 13 feet deep.
The last M-60A3 tank was built for the Army in 1983. Conversion of the tank to
the M-60A3TTS is currently underway.
